THE BIRTH OF BING AND A VOICE THAT WOULD CHANGE MUSIC FOREVER

On May 3, 1903, in the quiet city of Tacoma, Washington, a baby boy was born who would one day become the most influential voice in American popular music. His name was Harry Lillis Crosby—though the world would come to know him simply as Bing.

Harry was the fourth of seven children in a close-knit Irish-American family. His father, Harry Lowe Crosby, worked as a bookkeeper, while his mother, Catherine Harrigan Crosby, kept the household running with warmth and discipline. When Bing was just three years old, the family moved to Spokane, Washington, where he would spend his formative years.

The nickname “Bing” came later, inspired by a comic strip called The Bingville Bugle that young Harry adored. Friends teased him about his enthusiasm for the strip, and soon “Bing” stuck—a playful moniker that would become iconic.

Growing up in Spokane, Bing was an ordinary boy with an extraordinary ear for music. He loved the sounds drifting from phonographs and the rhythms of ragtime that were sweeping the nation. Summers were spent playing baseball and fishing along the Spokane River, but music was always close by. He sang in school plays, harmonized with friends, and absorbed every note he heard.

No one could have guessed that this boy, born in a modest home in Tacoma, would one day revolutionize the art of singing. Bing Crosby’s birth marked the beginning of a journey that would lead to radio dominance, Hollywood stardom, and recordings that sold in the millions. His easygoing style and intimate approach to the microphone would change the way America listened to music—and the way singers performed it.

From that quiet May morning in 1903, a legend was set in motion. The world didn’t know it yet, but the voice that would define an era had just taken its first breath...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BING!

Today marks what would have been the 119th birthday of the great Bing Crosby!

Crosby was born on May 3, 1903 in Tacoma, Washington, in a house his father built at 1112 North J Street. In 1906, his family moved to Spokane in Eastern Washington state, where he was raised. In 1913, his father built a house at 508 E. Sharp Avenue. The house sits on the campus of his alma mater, Gonzaga University. It functions today as a museum housing over 200 artifacts from his life and career, including his Oscar.

He was the fourth of seven children: brothers Laurence Earl "Larry" (1895–1975), Everett Nathaniel (1896–1966), Edward John "Ted" (1900–1973), and George Robert "Bob" (1913–1993); and two sisters, Catherine Cordelia (1904–1974) and Mary Rose (1906–1990). His parents were Harry Lowe Crosby (1870–1950), a bookkeeper, and Catherine Helen "Kate" (née Harrigan; 1873–1964). His mother was a second generation Irish-American. His father was of Scottish and English descent; an ancestor, Simon Crosby, emigrated from England to New England in the 1630s during the Puritan migration to New England. Through another line, also on his father's side, Crosby is descended from Mayflower passenger William Brewster (c. 1567 – April 10, 1644).

Wherever Bing came from, he certainly became a legend! Happy birthday Bing!

BING DESERVES A BIRTHDAY BASH

Here's an interesting article that I found online about how Bing deserve a birthday bash each year...

Yesterday was Elvis Presley’s birthday.

Because I once lived in Memphis, that sometimes makes me wonder.

Should Bing Crosby be a bigger deal in Spokane than he seems to be?

Oh, I realize Bing is and always will be an iconic figure here in the city where he grew up. Rightly so. He is a long, long way from being forgotten, here or elsewhere.

But here’s the thing. Elvis is practically an industry in Memphis. And though my memories of how that Tennessee city regarded the late singer are of the long-ago variety now, I remember that celebrations of his life were almost inescapable there.

Some of the reasons might be obvious.

Though both singers died in 1977, Elvis was much younger and closer to the height of his fame at that time.

His fan base was/is younger.

Though he spent a lot of time in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Elvis never stopped living in Memphis. Crosby had a lake place in Idaho, but Southern California was his adult home.

For those in Britain or Nova Scotia planning a pilgrimage, Memphis is easier to get to.

Because Elvis lived in Memphis as an adult, there are more people still alive there with relevant brush-with-fame stories.

And so on.

I’m not really sure what a heightened level of Crosby appreciation would look like here in Spokane. Beyond the acknowledgements our city already has in place, I mean. Everybody pretending to smoke a pipe on a designated Bing Day? Everybody dressing like Father O’Malley from “Going My Way”?

Maybe it would suffice if more people read the biography of the crooner by Gary Giddins. (The first volume has lots of Spokane stuff.)

Or perhaps we should just be satisfied to let time march on. Spokane has occasionally been accused of living in the past, after all...

BING AND HIS BIRTHDAY

Today would have been Bing's 112 birthday. To this day there is confusion on the year and sometimes even the day that Bing was born on. It is pretty much accepted now that Bing was born Harry Lillis Crosby on May 3, 1903, in a house that his father, Harry Lowe Crosby, built at 1112 North J Street, Tacoma, Washington. Bing had no birth certificate, and the actual date of his birth was shrouded in mystery until after his death.

Even Bing's immediate family assigned at least 3 different years for his birth. For example, Ted Crosby's 1937 biography of his younger brother never actually lists Bing's birthdate, but from the ages he assigned to Bing throughout the book Ted implies that Bing was born the first week of May in 1901. This early birth is 9 months after Ted's (July 30, 1900). This seems most improbable if you consider that typical human females do not regain their fertility for at least 6 weeks following childbirth. The early May 1901 birth would require that Bing be born at least a month premature, but there is no account of any such premature birth. Meanwhile, archival documents of Bing's high school and college years at Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington, indicate that Ted's placement of many events in Bing's school days is at least a year before their actual occurrence.

During most of his lifetime Bing celebrated May 2, 1904 as his birthdate. After Bing's death in 1977 a Tacoma priest disclosed Roman Catholic Church baptismal records that revealed Bing's actual birthdate. Contemporary newspaper reports of Bing's birth also confirm the date as May 3, 1903:

The Tacoma Daily News Wednesday, May 6, 1903:
"Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Crosby are receiving congratulations on the arrival of a son at their household May 3."
Tacoma Daily Ledger, Thursday May 7, 1903:
"A little son arrived May 3 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Crosby".

Apparently the family began celebrating May 2nd as Bing's birthday in deference to his sister, Mary Rose, who was also born on May 3 in 1906.

So happy birthday Bing - no matter how old you really are!

KATHRYN CROSBY TURNS 80

When a young Kathryn Grant married older crooner Bing Crosby, many people thought it would not last. However, they remained married for twenty years until Bing's death. Bing has been dead over 35 years now, and Kathryn remains one of Bing's supporters. On this day, November 25, Kathryn Crosby turns 80 years old.

Born Olive Kathryn Grandstaff in Houston, Texas, she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1955. Two years later she became Bing Crosby's second wife, being more than thirty years his junior. The couple had three children, Harry, Mary Frances, and Nathaniel. She appeared as a guest star on her husband's 1964–1965 ABC sitcom The Bing Crosby Show. She largely retired after their marriage, but did have a featured role in the courtroom drama Anatomy of a Murder (1959).

She also played the part of "Mama Bear" alongside her husband and children in Goldilocks and starred with Jack Lemmon in Operation Mad Ball (1957).In the mid-1970s, she hosted The Kathryn Crosby Show, a 30-minute local talk-show on KPIX-TV in San Francisco. Husband Bing appeared as a guest occasionally. Since Bing Crosby's death in 1977, she has taken on a few smaller roles and the lead in the short-lived 1996 Broadway musical State Fair.

For 16 years ending in 2001, Crosby hosted the Crosby National Golf Tournament at Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, North Carolina. A nearby bridge carrying U.S. Route 158 over the Yadkin River is named for Kathryn Crosby. On November 4, 2010, Crosby was seriously injured in an automobile accident in the Sierra Nevada that killed her 85-year-old second husband, Maurice William Sullivan, whom she married in 2000. Luckily Kathryn recovered...

HAPPY 108TH BIRTHDAY BING!

It is nice to see that Bing still gets mentioned 108 years after his birth. The mention is short, but it is still nice to see. Happy birthday Bing!

Today in Music History - May 3

In 1903, singer and actor Bing Crosby was born in Tacoma, Wash. He sang with dance bands from 1925 to 1930, and in 1931 began work in radio and films. Crosby gained enormous popularity for his crooning style, which was ideal to the new radio medium. His recording of "White Christmas" was the best-selling record of all time until Elton John's tribute to the late Princess Diana, "Candle in the Wind 1997." In 1944, he won an Academy Award for his performance in "Going My Way." His other notable films included "The Country Girl" in '54, "High Society" in '56 and the remake of "Stagecoach" in '65. Crosby, who had a lifelong love affair with golf, died in 1977 after a round of golf in Spain.

BING'S 108TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

On May 3, 2011 the 108th birthday of Bing Crosby will be celebrated with "Classic Movies at the Bing." The celebration is put on by the Advocates for The Bing Crosby Theater. The great theater is located at the corner of Sprague and Lincoln in Spokane, Washington. (I sometimes hate being an Easterner!) A $5 donation is suggested with all proceeds go to supporting future movies:

Country Girl Screening & Bing’s Birthday Bash
Tuesday, May 3

-Free cake and punch starting at 6 p.m.
-Assortment of Bing Crosby short features on the screen.
-Feature starts at 7 p.m.

The Country Girl was unlike any movie Bing Crosby had made before -- a serious study of a man in crisis. For his performance as an alcoholic actor wilting under the pressure of trying to re-establish his career, Bing was nominated for an Oscar. His character is bolstered by a devoted wife with the strengths he does not have. Grace Kelly -- also playing counter-type as a doughty housewife -- won the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance. She finds in William Holden the strengths Bing’s character does not have. Who wins her?
